When a second-hand vehicle is sold, the Registration Certificate (RC) must be transferred to the buyer — legally within 14 days of sale. The seller files Form 29 (notice of transfer) and the buyer files Form 30 (application), both through the Vahan portal, then the RTO verifies and issues a fresh smart-card RC in the buyer's name. Get the hypothecation cleared and an inter-state NOC first if they apply.

How long do I have to transfer the RC after buying?

What if the vehicle still has a loan on it?
Terminate the hypothecation first — get the bank's loan-clearance NOC and Form 35 and have the lien removed on the RC before transferring ownership.
