Register as a freelancer / consultant — India
Also known as: go freelance, start consulting, freelancer registration India, independent contractor setup
The lightweight setup an independent freelancer or consultant in India actually needs — mostly a PAN, a business current account, and (only past certain thresholds) GST, plus a free Udyam registration for MSME benefits. State-agnostic: this works the same in every state.
2 procedures: 0 required for everyone, 1 depend on your setup, 1 recommended.

Depends on your setup
Crossing the services threshold or selling via platforms makes GST registration mandatory; below that it is optional (and adds a filing burden).
Depends on your setup: GST is required once your professional receipts cross ₹20 lakh (₹10 lakh in special-category states), or if you supply services through an e-commerce operator/marketplace. Interstate supply of services below the threshold is generally exempt — but confirm your exact case.
Recommended (not legally required)
Free MSME registration. For a proprietor freelancer it doubles as handy business proof for opening a current account, and unlocks priority-sector lending and delayed-payment protection. Not legally required to freelance.
Journey-level pitfalls
- Costly mistake —PAN comes first. You need a PAN before Udyam, GST or a business current account. For an individual, an e-PAN is free and near-instant via the Income Tax portal with Aadhaar OTP — don't pay an agent ₹300–800 for it.
- For a business current account, banks ask for PAN plus proof of business — for a proprietor freelancer, an Udyam certificate (or GST registration, or Shop Act) usually satisfies this. Getting Udyam first can save a second bank visit.
- Don't register for GST voluntarily just to look official: it creates a permanent return-filing obligation (even NIL periods usually need a return). Register when a threshold or platform trigger actually requires it, or when input-credit/B2B clients make it worthwhile.
Track this journey
Turn this into one tracked journey — a linked case per procedure, in the right order, with progress, deadlines and the sequence rationale (“do this after that, and why”).
Combined fees/timelines are computed from the linked procedures at render. PAN and a current account sit outside these components (PAN e-filing is free; account opening is bank-specific).
After you finish: staying compliant
Getting these licences is only the start — each carries ongoing obligations (renewals, returns, display and inspection rules). KaamKar tracks them for you.
